Paris Lifestyle: AfricaParis

by

By Jackie Celestin-Andre

The beauty of the culture Afropéenne was showcased in one weekend of beauty, fashion, and the arts. AfricaParis, a weekend cultural Afropean event, was curated to highlight African culture in its many forms from fashion, to beauty, music and lifestyle. It included a pop up store with over 50 designers showcasing their talents in clothing, creative accessories, shoes, bags and jewelry; there was so much beautiful stuff that I had to fight the urge to buy it all. In addition to the fashion and lifestyle shops, there was also a small hair and beauty section.

The 3-day weekend was also punctuated by a series of theatrical performances, concerts, conferences and debates. While I couldn’t attend all of the events, I did get to spend time meeting some very creative and ambitious entrepreneurs who are making beautiful things out of love, passion and a strong sense of conviction. And I did not miss the fabulous hair show with hair fashions in highly creative, dynamic looks designed by Sephora Joannes.

Let’s talk about a few of the stands that I was able to visit.

EKEEYA CREATIONS

A two-year-old brand, Ekeeya Creations was founded by husband and wife team Bibi and Marmet. Together they have combined their talents with their fashion sense from their respective native countries, Kente and Ghana. This duo creates pieces ranging from clutches to Smartphone cases to shoes.

YALERRI
Yalerri is a brand from the Ivory Coast. The creator of the brand, Pacy Kadio-Moroko, mixes different types of fabrics (like African wax and Jeans) together to create contemporary styles.

ELDIMAA

Created by Elizabeth, the Eldimaa brand is London-based and offers colorful accessories and clothing.

BILAMA
Françoise and Carine both enjoy using the Calabash plants (gourds) to make really cool and unique bags.

Overall, I enjoyed my AfricaParis experience and connecting with many of the artisans who participated.
