COCOBlogger: Eryn S The Chic Seamstress

by

What to do when you are pregnant and don’t want to commit to buying maternity wear that you may never wear again? Well, for this chic CocoBlogger, sewing her own seemed like the perfect solution.

A self-taught seamstress, thanks to video tutorials and trial and error, Eryn now shares her talent with her followers and has even started a boutique to make available some of her most beloved designs. Inspiring, isn’t it? We think so and that’s the reason she is our CocoBlogger of the Month.

Read on as this fashionista shares how her blog “Style Sew Me” got started, her fashion inspirations and more.

Eryn, tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.
I am the seamstress behind Style Sew Me, a style and DIY blog featuring everyday style that I have sewn for myself. My blog also features video tutorials on creating stylish clothing as well as beginner sewing tutorials for those interested in learning how to sew or just need a refresher. I also have a bespoke boutique, CAS Clothing, where certain pieces I design can be made-to-order.

What inspired you to begin blog, “Style Sew Me”?
I’d started blogging about 4 months after I had my daughter. This was my first time actually having a hobby that I thoroughly enjoyed and was constantly seeking to learn more about. So, I started documenting some of my successful makes on my blog. I didn’t tell anyone about it for about 6 months and then people randomly started finding me. It’s definitely time consuming, almost like a part time job but it has kept a sense of “me” in tact. When I sew and blog, that’s my time. I’m not a mom or a wife. I’m just me!

Who taught you how to sew?
I learned how to sew through sewing tutorials, experimentation, and a lot of trial and error! When I first started, I’d say about 1 in every 5 things I made were actually good enough to walk out of the house in. I just kept at it, read books, watched videos, and sprinkled in my own experimentation to get to where I am now.

What’s the most challenging thing about making your own clothes?
Constructing a garment is the easy part. It’s the finishing details and perfecting the fit that is unique to my own body that make it go from “You made that, didn’t you?” to “OOOOH, girl, where’d you BUY that!!” Another challenge is having that perfect fabric and trying to decide what to do with it! I have several Chanel-type boucle fabrics that I’ve been just torn on what to create with them! They’re so beautiful that I have to do them justice. These are serious decisions to make!

You also own a boutique.  What are some of the items that you carry that are popular among your clients?
Yes, my boutique is called CAS Clothing and my best seller is my Off-the-Shoulder Peplum dress. It’s such a versatile dress. It is fitted close to the body and perfect for date night. Or you can throw on your favorite blazer and statement necklace and rock it in the office. It’s the perfect balance of sexy and modest.

Where do you get your style inspiration?
My style inspiration comes from balancing comfort and style because I am always on the go doing something. I use Pinterest for inspiration, but for the most part, it comes to me right before I get ready to make it.

Who are some of your favorite designers?
My favorite designer of the moment is Lela Rose. She takes classic silhouettes and make them chic and stylish by using feminine prints and textured fabrics to create fun looks.

What are some of the trends for Spring/Summer 2016?
Bold and vibrant colors combined with drapey and flowy looks. I think this spring we will be moving away from more structured garments and going towards a more care-free, less traditional style.

What is one of your fashion must haves?
I would have to say a nude pump. Finding a brown-girl friendly nude is challenging, but Jessica Simpson had a brown pump that was a perfect nude for women of color.

What three items are in your Ultimate Beauty Arsenal–those Holy Grail items you can’t live without?

Oh, this is easy! My tried and true products are Kinky Curly Knot Today, One ‘N Only Argan Oil, and Bekura Beauty Lemon Beignet Bath Sugar Sorbet which is a yummy body scrub!
